Homeostasis - kidney B3 Flashcards
Why do humans need to remove waste products from their bodies?
To keep their internal environment relatively constant
What is homeostasis?
Keeping water and ion content temperature blood glucose level within very narrow ranges
What are the waste products that have to be removed from the bodies?
Carbon dioxide and urea
How is CO2 produced and removed?
Produced by respiration
Removed via lungs when we breath out
How is urea produced?
In the liver
Breaking down of amino acids
How is urea removed?
By kidneys
In urine
temporary stored in the bladder
When do water and ions enter the body?
Eat and drink
What happens if the water or ion content of the body is wrong?
Too much water
Move into and out of cells
Damage them
How does a healthy kidney produce urine?
Filtering blood
Reabsorbing all the sugar
Reabsorbing DISSOLVED IONS needed by body
Reabsorbing as much water body needs
Releasing urine: urea, excess ions and water
Two processes occuring in the body to make urine?
Filtering blood
Reabsorbing substances body needs
How can a person suffering from kidney failure treated?
Kidney dialysis machine
A healthy kidney transplanted
How does a dialysis machine work?
Person’s blood flows between partially permeable membranes
Fluid contains same concentration of USEFUL SUBTANCES as blood
USEFUL glucose and ions not lost
Urea passes out from blood into dialysis fluid
Why is dialysis useful?
Restores concentration of dissolved subtances in blood to normal levels
How often does dialysis have to be carried out?
Regular intervals
What happens in kidney transplants?
Diseased kidney
replaced by a healthy one
from a donor
