Endocrine structure, secretes progesterone & estrogen?
Corpus luteum
Corpus luteum degenerates?
No pregnancy
Corpus luteum produces hormones for 3 months until placenta takes over?
Pregnancy
Uterine (menstrual) cycle 3 phases
Menstrual phase
Proliferation (preovulatory) phase
Secretory (postovulatoy) phase
-days 1-5
-shedding of endometrium
-3-5 day of bleeding
Menstrual phase
-days 6-14
-regeneration of endometrium
-new layer thickens, glands enlarge, angiogenesis increase no. Of spiral a
-cervical mucus decrease viscous- sperm can pass into uterus
Proliferation (preovulatory) phase
-days 15-28, 14-day phase
-preparation for implantation
-conversion of endometrium to secretory mucosa
-secretes glycogen into uterine cavity to sustain embryo until implantation
-cervical mucus becomes viscous again- protects embryo from incoming pathogens
Secretory (postovulatory) phase
-facilitates Ca uptake, sustaining destiny of the skeleton
-stimulates reabsorption of Na from the kidney
-maintains decrease blood cholesterol levels & increases HDL levels
Estrogen
-enhances diuresis (urine excretion)
-increases body C* (can be used to monitor ovulation)
Progesterone
-thought to be responsible for libido (sex drive) & aggressive behaviour
-excess leads to masculinization; facial hair, lower voice, decrease breast tissue
Testosterone
Mastitis (inflammation of breast affecting the mammary glands)
Causes?
-most common during early nursing
-hormonal imbalances
-trauma
-skin infections
-tumours
-inflamed, hard, tender breasts
-abscess formation possible if untreated
Mastitis
-most common breast lesion
-non-specific, benign w/palpable lump/nodes & mastalgia
-affects pre-menopausal
-pn: heaviness to tenderness
Fibrocystic disease of the breast
-malignant neoplasm
-leading cause of cancer deaths in females
-male can also get it
-often manifests as a single lesion (firm & ill-defined)
