Ligaments, Tendons And Muscle Types Flashcards
What do ligaments do
Join bone to bone
Why are ligaments relevant to physical activity
Help keep joints stable
Prevent unwanted movement that might cause an injury such as a dislocation when playing sport
What do tendons do
Join muscle to bone
Why are tendons relevant in physical activity
Hold the muscle to the bone so that when the muscle contracts the muscle can pull on the bone and cause movement at joints
What are the three muscle types
Cardiac
Involuntary
Voluntary
Location of cardiac muscle
Cardiac muscle forms the heart
Location of voluntary muscles
The skeletal muscles that attach via tendons to the skeleton to allow movement
Location of involuntary muscles
Found in blood vessels, stomach and intestines
How does cardiac muscle work
Unconsciously controlled
We don’t have to think about it to make it contract
How do voluntary muscles work
Under conscious control
We move them when we want to
Consciously decide when they should move
How do involuntary muscles work
Unconsciously controlled
Contract slowly and rhythmically
Contract when required by the body
Example of cardiac muscle
Cardiac muscle in the heart contracts to pump blood around body
Example of involuntary muscles
In blood vessels they help regulate the blood flow for vascular shunting
Example of voluntary muscles
The bicep contract to flex the arm at the elbow when we preform bicep curls
Analyse how the characteristics of voluntary and cardiac muscle types support their function
Voluntary muscles work under conscious control so we have to think about using them
Whereas cardiac muscle contracts unconsciously therefore we don’t have to tell the heart to contract
This is because we need heart to pump continuously to transport blood and nutrient otherwise we would die so it continues to pump without us thinking about it
However we need the skeletal muscles to work when we need specific actions
