functions of the skeleton Flashcards
What are the 5 key functions?
production of blood cells
storage of minerals
protection of vital organs
muscle attachment
formation of joint for movement
Example of protection of the skeleton
your cranium protects the brain if an opponent follows through widly with their hockey stick and hits you on the head during a game.
Two minerals in mineral storage are ….
and what do they do?
Calcium and phosphorus are stored in bones to strengthen them
What type of blood cells are beneficial to physical preformance ?
platelets - clot blood if cut (contact sports)
Red blood cells - transport oxygen to working muscles
white blood cells - fight infection
How does the skeletal system aid movement?
muscles attach to bones so when muscles contract they pull the bones to cause movement
movement occurs at joints of the skeleton
Bones act as levers, what does this allow
levers allow the body to increase the force it can generate or increase the speed of the movement
The skeletal system has several functions. Describe how the skeleton aids movement.
The skeleton is made up of joints and movement occurs at these joints. The skeleton also provides a place for muscle attachment, allowing movement.
