Plasma
Platelets
White blood cells
Red blood cells
What is plasma why is it useful
Transports the blood cells, platelets and nutrients to different parts of the body
Liquid part of the blood
Why are RBCs useful
Carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
Oxygen diffused into bloodstream from alveoli in the lungs
Oxygen binds with haemoglobin in RBCs and transported to working muscles where needed for aerobic activity
Some co2 produced in the tissue is transported away from muscles
Why are platelets useful
Prevent bleeding
Stick to the walls of the blood vessels
Form a plug to prevent further blood loss
What are WBCs useful
Help fight infection
Travel around body and fight infection or disease that might be there
Explain why plasma is so important to sport performers
Plasma is the liquid component of blood
As it’s a liquid it flows through the blood vessels allowing transportation of anything within it
Therefore plasma can carry RBCs to supply oxygen to working muscles during physical activity
