Composition Of Air Flashcards
What is inhaled air mean?
The air we breathe into the lungs
What does exhaled air mean?
The air we breathe out of the lungs
What are the three gases inhaled and exhaled?
Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen and Nitrogen
What is the percentage of the gases inhaled as air?
Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%, Carbon Dioxide 0.04%
What is the percentage of the gases exhaled as air?
Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 16%, Carbon Dioxide 4%
The difference between inhaled and exhaled air
Nitrogen has remained the same, oxygen levels have gone down, carbon dioxide levels have risen.
Why do these three gases not add up to 100%?
The rest of the air is made up of tiny% of other gases
What is the importance of nitrogen
Largest % of gas
Same amount breathed in and out
It doesnt go down because the body does not use it during physical activity
Does not go up as the body does not produce it during physical activity
Why is oxygen useful
Levels decrease as oxygen is used in energy production for activity or for recovery so there is less oxygen to breathe out
What is the importance of carbon dioxide
Levels increase as carbon dioxide is produced as a by product of energy production
