Lesson 7.3 Metabolism Flashcards
Define metabolism
all chemical reactions of life
Define anabolic
making larger molecules out of smaller ones
ex; dehydration synthesis
Define catabolic
breaking down larger molecules into smaller ones
ex: hydrolysis
Define exergonic
Exiting energy; net release of energy
The amount of energy required to break bonds is less than the amount of energy released when making bonds.
Define endergonic
Required net input of energy; The amount of energy required to break bonds is more than the amount of energy released when making bonds
Define hydrolysis
The “ chemical breaking” of a polymer due to water.
Define synthesis
The “ chemical making “ of monomers to a polymer due to water.
Describe the ATP cycle.
For cells to receive energy, one of the phosphate groups in ATP must be broken off the molecule, releasing energy and resulting in ADP (catabolic;exergonic). Then together with cellular respiration, another phosphate group is made to convert ADP back in ATP (anabolic;endergonic).
Is an anabolic reaction exergonic or endergonic?
An anabolic reaction is endergonic.
Is a catabolic reaction exergonic or endergonic?
A catabolic reaction is exergonic.
Give an example of an exergonic reaction being linked with an endergonic reaction and why they must occur in that order.
Photosynthesis is an exergonic reaction that is linked with cellular respiration which is an endergonic reaction. They must occur in this occur as photosynthesis’s products are the reactants for cellular respiration to occur in plants.
