Lesson 1.0 and 1.1 Flashcards
What is biology?
the study of life
What are the parts of scientific argumentation?
CER
1.Claim
2.Evidence
3. Reasoning
Explain the concept of CER.
- Claim is the conclusion that answers the original problem.
- Evidence is pieces of data used to support your claim.
- Reasoning is an explanation of how the data supports your claim.
What types of data should be used for as evidence?
Tables, graphs, models, and other visuals
Why is it important to be detailed and provide support for a scientific argumentation?
It is important because it ensures that the argument is based on evidence and can be verified by others. This enhances the credibility of your evidence and allows further investigation.
What does biotic mean ?
Living factors in an environment that make up an ecosystem. This includes plants, animals, bacteria, and food sources.
What does abiotic mean ?
Non-living components in an ecosystem including climate, temperature, and sunlight.
What are some objects that are hard to identify as biotic or abiotic?
Sunflower seeds, soil, wood
What does the PMC model stand for?
Program, Metabolism, Container
What does program mean in PMC?
set of genetic instructions that can be used to build an organism and reproduce. (Ex. DNA, RNA)
What does metabolism mean in PMC?
process of getting and using energy (building molecules ad ability to grow)
What does container mean in PMC?
membrane that separates organism from its environment and controls what comes in and out
What are models of life based on?
They are based on scientific observations and principles.
What is an example of a container for an organism?
A shell is an example because it serves as a protective covering for animals like turtles, snails, and crabs. It also provides them shelter and defense.
How many nm are in 4.5 cm?
45,000,000
What are the levels of organization ?
Atom - Molecule - Organelle - Cell - Tissue - Organ - Organ System - Organism - Population - Community - Ecosystem - Biome - Biosphere
What are some examples of biomes ?
Tundra, Rainforest, Desert
What is the difference between population and community ?
A population is defined as members of the same species that interact in the same area. (Ex. White tailed deer in Tippecanoe County)
A community is the combination of the populations in the same area.
(Ex. All living things in Tippecanoe County)
What is the difference between organelles , organs, and organism ?
Organelles are the structure that complete jobs inside cells (Ex. Mitochondria, Nucleus).
Organs are a group of tissues that perform a similar function (Ex. Brain, Heart).
An organism is an individual living thing (Ex. Person, Parrot).
What is an example of an unicellular organism ?
Amoeba
Can some questions not have a definite answer and if so what is an example of one?
Yes, some questions don’t have a definite answer. An example of one is “Should viruses be considered as living things?”
