Lesson 3.3 Flashcards
What is a trophic level?
the position that is occupied by a species in a food web/cascade
Define autotroph
an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, C02, etc.
Define heterotroph
an organism that consumes other organisms for their source of energy
What is a herbivore?
organism that feeds on plants
What is omnivore?
organism that feeds on both plants and animals
What is a carnivore?
organism that feeds on animals
What is a detritivore?
organism that feeds on dead matter and decomposing organic matter
Why is a keystone species important?
They keep the biodiversity and support the community to keep it’s systems working. They play an influential ecological role on the other species.
What is an invasive species ?
A non-native species that could harm and overshadow the native species.
What is a trophic cascade?
ecological interactions of a keystone species that can control the entire ecosystem
What does a trophic cascade show?
It shows the effects of one species on another and how species balance each other out.
What is a food web?
All the food chains in an ecosystem
What does a food web show?
The diets of species and what level of consumers they are.
What trophic level are autotrophs usually at?
Producer
At what trophic level do you find carnivores?
Secondary and above
