Lesson 2.3 Human Pop. Growth Flashcards
What did we learn in this unit?
Factors affecting population growth rate and demographic transition.
What is one factor affecting population growth rate?
- Sex ratio - number of females vs. number of males.
- more females =higher growth
What is another factor affecting population growth rate?
- Age structure - the number of females at reproductive age born in the same cohort
- more females at reproductive age increases population growth
Would a longer or shorter generation time lead to larger population growth?
A shorter generation time would lead to a larger population growth because that would force reproduction to occur faster and earlier.
How can an age structure diagram be used to predict population growth?
By showing the distribution of different age groups, which indicates birth rates, and future changes in population size
Do developing or developed countries have higher birth rates?
Developing have higher birth rates compared to developed countries.
What are two concerns with population growth?
Increasing the extraction of resources and increase in freshwater used for drinking, agriculture, recreation, and industrial processes.
Explain the uneven distrivution of resources in developed vs. developing countries.
Developed countries are using and consuming more resources than developing countries. There is also an increasing gap between rich and poor.
What does demographic transition show?
The transformation of a country’s population structure from birth and death rates through stages of economic development
Which stage is the best ideal for countries.
Stage 4 is the most ideal because the population is stable and a high level of economics growth is indicated
Describe stages 1 and 2 of demographic transition
Stage 1 - Birth and death rates are high so the population growth is very slow
Stage 2 - Death rates drop due to improvements in health care and birth rates remain high; rapid growth
Describe stages 3 and 4 of demographic transition
Stage 3 - Birth rates start to decline and death rates continue to fall; slowing growth
Stage 4 - Birth and death rates are both low so growth is minimum and stabilizes
Describe stages 5 of demographic transition
Stage 5 - Birth rates fall below death rates which leads to declining population
What part of the population do we want an increase in?
The younger population because represent the future workorce and drive economic growth and innovation so country stays better.
Give 4 examples of countries in stages of demographic transition.
The U.S. and Germany are developed countries that are in stages 4 and 5.
Mozambique and Bolivia are developing countries that are in stages 2 and 3.
