Lesson 2A (Part 2) Flashcards
What are the different phases in the ovarian cycle? (3)
- Follicular
- Ovulatory
- Luteal
What does LH do in the ovulatory phase?
It surges and causes the follicular and ovarian wall to rupture
What happens when LH surges and the follicular and ovarian wall rupture?
Ovulation occurs
How does the mature ovum get picked up?
By fimbriae
Fimbrae
A fingerlike projection at the end of the fallopian tube near the ovary.
FSH
Follicle stimulating hormone
What does follicle stimulating hormone regulate? (4)
- Development
- Growth
- Pubertal maturation
- Reproductive processes of the body
Where does FSH come from?
Anterior part of the pituitary gland
LH
Lutenizing hormone
Lutenizing hormone
Stimulates the ovaries to produce oestradiol
What is common during ovulation?
Mittelschmerz
Mittelschmerz
Mid cycle pain
What are 2 symptoms of ovulation?
- Mittelschmerz
2. Fluid in the posterior cul-de-sac
What happens in the follicular phase?
A group of primary follicles begin development
- FSH
What do the follicles produce as they mature?
Estrogen
What happens when 1/2 follicles become dominant? (2)
- They start to produce more estrogen
2. The rest of the follicles undergo atresia
Atresia
Absence or abnormal narrowing
What do dominant follicles become?
Graafian follicles
Graafian follicle
A fluid-filled structure in the mammalian ovary within which an ovum develops before ovulation
Where do graafian follicles move toward before ovulation?
The ovarian wall
What happens during the luteal phase?
Graafian cavity collapses and forms into corpus luteum
What does the corpus luteum mostly secrete?
Progesterone
- some estrogen
How long does the corpus luteum last?
12-14 days
- unless it receives hCG from the gestational sac
What does the corpus luteum become if it doesnt get hCG and degenerates?
Corpus albicans
- and it will slowly disappear = stops producing progesterone
