16
Q

What does the broad ligament do?

A

Drapes over the uterus and the fallopian tubes

17
Q

What are the 3 layers of the uterine wall?

A
  1. Tunica serosa / perimetrium
  2. Tunica muscularis / myometrium
  3. Tunica mucosa / endometrium
18
Q

What kind of tissue is the tunica serosa?

A

Connective tissue

19
Q

What is the tunica muscularis capable of?

A

Very strong contractions to expel a fetus at term

20
Q

What does the tunica mucosa do?

A

It thickens and becomes more vascular to prepare to support a fertilized egg
- this occurs approximately every 28 days

21
Q

What happens if the egg is not fertilized in the endometrium?

A

It will simply pass through the uterus

- bleed out the vagina

22
Q

Why does the tunica mucosa layer shed if not fertilized?

A

Without the hormonal reinforcement of a pregnancy, the vessels of the endometrium will constrict that leads to necrosis and the lining will be shed

23
Q

What is shedding of the endometrium layer called?

A

Meses

24
Q

What is another word for an egg?

A

Oocyte

25
Q

What 2 layers make up the endometrium?

A
  1. Functional
    - superficial
  2. Basal
    - deep
26
Q

What happens to the functional layer of the endometrium?

A

It thickens during the cycle and is sloughed off at the end of the cycle

27
Q

What is the functional layer directly involved with?

A

The implantation of the blastocyst

28
Q

What does the basal layer contain?

A

The ends of uterine glands

29
Q

What does the basal layer have?

A

Its own blood supply

- not lost during menses

30
Q

What shape are ovaries?

A

Oval/almond shaped gland

31
Q

What are the functions of the ovaries? (2)

A
  1. Reproductive
    - produces the oocyte
  2. Endocrine
    - produces estrogen and progesterone
32
Q

How many primary follicles do newborns have?

A

1 million

33
Q

How many primary follicles will mature?

A

Approximately 400 of them

34
Q

What are the 3 cycles of the female cycle?

A
  1. Ovarian Cycle
  2. Hormonal Cycle
  3. Endometrial Cycle
35
Q

Ovarian cycle

A

Refers to the series of changes in the ovary during which the follicle matures, the ovum is shed, and the corpus luteum develops

36
Q

Hormonal cycle

A

Is another term for the menstrual cycle

37
Q

Endometrial cycle

A

The portion within the menstrual cycle that has to do with your endometrium
- very important component of helping your body prepare for pregnancy
