(LESSON 17) Veins, Lymphatics, Fetal Circulation, And Endocrine System Lab Flashcards
Major veins of systemic circulation
image
Superior Vena Cava
receives systemic blood from all body regions superior to the diaphragm excluding the heart wall.
Arises from the union of the left and right brachiocephalic veins
joins the right atrium
Inferior Vena Cava
- Widest blood vessel in the body
- ascends along the posterior wall of abdominal cavity
- returns blood to the heart from all body regions inferior to the diaphragm
- begins at the union of the two common iliac veins at L5 vertebrae
- Joins right atrium
Dural Sinuses
- Most veins of brain drain into this
- Form an interconnected series of channels in the skull
- lie between the two layers of cranial dura mater
Superior and Inferior Sagittal SInuses
- Lie in the falx cerebri between the cerebral hemispheres.
Veinous drainage of head neck and brain

Internal jugular veins
- Drain almost all of the blood from the brain
- Descends through the neck deep to the sternocleidomastoid muscle
- Receives blood from branches of the facial and superficial temporal veins
- Joins the subclavian vein to form brachiocephalic vein
- Jugulum means “throat just above clavicle”
