Lesson 15 Flashcards

1
Q

Laa-e-nahi and Laa-e-nafi

prohibitive and negative

A

So we know that negative particle used with mudari is لا…

…IF instead of using لا for negative with mudaari, we use ما with mudaari, the verb refers to present time only.

e. g. I don’t drink coffee لا أشْرَبُ القَهْوَة (i.e. as a habit)
e. g. I am not drinking coffee now ما أشْرَبُ القَهْوَة (i.e. right now)

UNLIKE لا which is only for mudhaari, ما can be used with maadhi.

Q

‘Almost’ (maadi) / ‘is about to’ (mudari) is expressed by the verb:

A

كادَ يَكَادُ

e. g. كاد المُدَرِّسُ يَخْرُجُ - the teacher was about to leave.
e. g. يَكادَ الجَرَسُ يَرِنُّ - the bell is about to ring

From Corpus: . As with kāna (كان) the subject is a nominal word (noun or pronoun) found in the nominative case. However for kāda (كاد) the predicate will be an imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) found in the indicative mood marfūʿ (مرفوع). This verb takes the place of an accusative noun manṣūb (منصوب)
