Lectures 6 - Respiratory System Conditions Flashcards
Rhinitis
Inflammation of nasal mucosa = congestion
Sinusitis
Inflammation of sinuses = headaches
Laryngitis
Inflammation of larynx mucosa
Caused by exposure to dry air, bacterial infections, inhalation of irritants
Pleurisy / pleuritis
Inflammation of pleura = from pneumonia very painful
Hypoxia
Decreased availability of O2 to tissue = skin and mucosa become cyanotic
Atelectasis
Weakening of alveoli making them inept for respiration = from wound or injury to thorax like pneumothorax ( air in pleura cavity)
Emphysema
Dilation and destruction of the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar walls - hereditary factors
Asthma
Condition characterized by dyspnea, congestion, hypersecretion from the bronchi = often triggered by allergies
Tuberculosis
Infectious disease by mycobacterium tuberculosis (bacteria) = reaches lungs and lymph nodes causing fever, night sweats, weight loss, severe cough, hemolysis ( loss of blood via mouth)
