LECTURE 6: Cleaning and Disinfectants Flashcards
*go over starred and underlined parts especially for this lecture
TRUE or FALSE? Cleaning a disinfecting are the same thing?
FALSE
What is cleaning?
These are the steps of C&D that occur prior to
disinfection
What is the purpose of cleaning?
Remove “organic” matter to the best degree possible
What is disinfecting?
Actual application of a chemical/product that will eliminate
a certain % of remaining potential pathogens or
organisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses)
What are the 5 basic steps of cleaning?
- Pre-Cleaning
- Foaming with Soap
- Pressure rinsing
- Drying (yes that’s a step!)
- Application of disinfectant
What is the main goal of pre cleaning?
Remove organic matter and pathogens WITHOUT the aid of water
What are some examples of dry cleaning you can
think of for a poultry house?
Removal of litter (tractor or skid steer).
and shoveling fecal waste from baseboards.
What is the purpose of soap?
Break up dried organic matter
How is soap applied?
foamers
What is the ideal contact time for soap?
10-20 minutes
You are doing a 500 foot long barn. What
challenge might this be?
Don’t want soap to dry before rinsing! This reduces
the effectiveness of soap.
Why should surfaces be dry prior to disinfecting?
Disinfectant + water = dilution
Organic material in lift over water will inactivate the disinfectant
How can you aid the drying process?
- Squeegee pooled water (only on a concrete floor houses/areas)
- Utilize the house ventilation! Fans can be run over the course of a day or two, potentially even with added heat, to speed up the drying process.
What are the 2 major types of disinfectants?
- Liquids
- Foams
What might you need to be concerned about with
your disinfectant other than it’s efficacy?
Some disinfectants can be corrosive
What is scott’s rule of thumb?
80% cleaning and disinfecting should be done on the first 4 steps (pre cleaning) 20% effort should be applying the disinfectant
What are some challenges of live production C&D?
- High loads of organic mater
- Most disinfectants not designed for production uses
What is required for effective C&D?
Hands on dirty work and effective cleaning
What things are considered when choosing a disinfectant?
- Cost
- Water usage pH?
- Surface area to cover
- What you are tying to fight/prevent
What are 6 different types of disinfectants?
- Phenols
- Cresols
- Quaternary Ammonium
- Aldehydes
- Peroxygens
- Halogens
- Combo Products
What is the chemical makeup of phenols?
Six carbon ring with OH group attached
What are some characterisitics of phenols?
- Residual activity
- Broad spectrum (EXECPT BACTERIAL SPORES)
- Best activity in presence of ORGANIC MATTER of the disinfectants
What are some issues with phenols?
- Costly
- Efficacy is highly dependent on a number of factors
- Not great against clostridial diseases (spore formers)
- Causitc
Quats are a _____.
Detergent similar to soap
How does the chemical make up of quats effect the function?
+ charge and binds well to proteins and bacteria and denatures proteins and inhibit enzyme activity
What are some highlights of quats?
- MAJOR disinfectant used in hatcheries
- Some residual activity
- Work well on cleaned and sealed concrete floors, non rusted metals, and non-porous surfaces
What are some downsides of quats?
- Not suited for high organic load
environments - Very poor choice for any field
applications where high organic matter
is present (including vehicles)
What is the residual effect of aldehydes?
VERY POOR
What are formaldehyde characteristics?
- gaseous state
- carcinogen
- strict use of OSHA approved PPE
What are glutaraldehyde characteristics
- liquid
- does not revert to formaldehyde
- can be used as a fogged disinfectant (STILL NOT IN GAS)
What is the major halogen?
Bleach
What are characteristics of bleach?
- Quick kill
- No residual activity
Why is new solutions of bleach made every 24 hours?
Very short half life
Bleach (chlorine) works best in what conditions?
Acidic BUT don’t mix acid with bleach for better effectiveness
Iodine is used mostly as what?
Water supplements, seen used in foot baths
TRUE or FALSE? Iodine is generally used as a disinfectant?
FALSE
Peroxygens are most commonly used for what?
Products are most commonly used for drinker line
sanitation and hatcher humidity line sanitation
What is the “pad”?
Dirt pad layer underneath the litter
Can the pad be disinfected?
No
What are some methods of treating “the pad”?
- SALT
- Acidic liquids and solid powders/granules
Whats a short cut of cleaning and disinfecting that is commonly used in the industry?
practice of using the same sprayer/foamer for dual insecticide and disinfection. Will inactivate chemicals.
