TRUE or FALSE? Cleaning a disinfecting are the same thing?
FALSE
What is cleaning?
These are the steps of C&D that occur prior to
disinfection
What is the purpose of cleaning?
Remove “organic” matter to the best degree possible
What is disinfecting?
Actual application of a chemical/product that will eliminate
a certain % of remaining potential pathogens or
organisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses)
What are the 5 basic steps of cleaning?
- Pre-Cleaning
- Foaming with Soap
- Pressure rinsing
- Drying (yes that’s a step!)
- Application of disinfectant
What is the main goal of pre cleaning?
Remove organic matter and pathogens WITHOUT the aid of water
What are some examples of dry cleaning you can
think of for a poultry house?
Removal of litter (tractor or skid steer).
and shoveling fecal waste from baseboards.
What is the purpose of soap?
Break up dried organic matter
How is soap applied?
foamers
What is the ideal contact time for soap?
10-20 minutes
You are doing a 500 foot long barn. What
challenge might this be?
Don’t want soap to dry before rinsing! This reduces
the effectiveness of soap.
Why should surfaces be dry prior to disinfecting?
Disinfectant + water = dilution
Organic material in lift over water will inactivate the disinfectant
How can you aid the drying process?
- Squeegee pooled water (only on a concrete floor houses/areas)
- Utilize the house ventilation! Fans can be run over the course of a day or two, potentially even with added heat, to speed up the drying process.
What are the 2 major types of disinfectants?
- Liquids
- Foams
What might you need to be concerned about with
your disinfectant other than it’s efficacy?
Some disinfectants can be corrosive
What is scott’s rule of thumb?
80% cleaning and disinfecting should be done on the first 4 steps (pre cleaning) 20% effort should be applying the disinfectant
