LECTURE 23: Musculoskeletal Disease II Flashcards
What is rickets?
Softening of bones due to failure to mineralize osteoid = osteomalacia
What are the things that cause pathogenesis with rickets?
- Deficiency of calcium
- Deficiency of vitamin D3
- Deficiency of P
- Malabsorption
What are clinical signs of rickets?
- Difficulty walking
- Soft, rubbery beaks and bones
- Palpable curved keel
Rickets occur in why kinds of birds?
Young birds
What are gross lesions of rickets?
Beading of ribs
Soft rubbery bones
Rib Fractures
Lateral deviation of sternum
Widened growth plates
Rickets causes what abnormality?
Growth plate (beading at the ribs)
What is Cage layer fatigue?
Osteoporosis - thin and brittle bones
Really common with caged layers
What are clinical signs of cage layer fatigue?
Paralysis or fractures/deviation of spine that damages spinal cord
Fractures of the leg, wing bone, and soft shell eggs
For rickets and cage layer fatigue what do you test?
- Histopathology
- Feed and water
- Bone samples
- Blood levels
What is spondylolisthesis?
Kinky back posterior paresis/paralysis
What is Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD)?
Cartilage plug in the growth plate
Where is TD most common?
Growing meat-type birds
What causes TD?
Genetic selection
Ca/P ratio
Metabolic acidosis
Incorrect acid base
**Does not generally cause lameness
What is perosis?
Slipped tendons (tendons go out of place)
