Q

What is a divergent boundary: Oceanic Spreading center?

A

Rifting and spreading along a mid-ocean ridge creating new oceanic lithosphere

3
Q

What occurs in sea-floor spreading?

A

At mid ocean ridges, the release of pressure as the plates move apart allows hot magma from the asthenosphere to reach the ocean floor which cools and crystallizes to form a new lithosphere

Q

Which crust is the least stable?

A

Ocean crust is the least stable and subducts because it is more dense

Q

What is divergent boundaries: Continental Rifting?

A

Mantle material also rises from near the core-mantle boundary in the form of thermal plumes. When the plume nears the lithosphere it spread it laterally moving segments outward and can form new oceanic tracts

Q

What is the Wilson cycle?

A

The opening of new ocean basins along divergent zones, the expansion of the basin as seafloor spreading continues and the ultimate closure of the basin as the plate converge

8
Q

What occurs in ocean continent convergence?

A

Oceanic lithosphere is subducted and a volcanic mountain belt is formed at the continental margin. The oceanic plate is melted and reincorporated into the asthenosphere

Q

What occurs in Ocean-Ocean convergence?

Q

What occurs in Continent-Continent boundaries?

A

Two landmass come together to form a mountain range because both plates are too buoyant to sink into the mantle

16
Q

What is the stability of Cratons based on?

A

Isostasy

17
Q

What is Isostacy?

A

The property whereby the lithosphere maintains floatation balance. Meaning it is neither rising or sinking on the asthenosphere

18
Q

What are Transform boundaries?

A

When two plates scrape past each other leading to earthquakes

19
Q

What is an example of a Transform boundaries?

A

San Andreas fault

20
Q

What are Hot Spotes?

A

Volcanic eruptions that arise when isolated plumes of magma rise from deep within the asthenosphere to the surface

21
Q

What are two well known examples of hot spots?

A

Hawaiian islands and yellowstone national park
