lecture 5 - Digetsive Tract Flashcards
Digestion tract order
Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small intestine, Large intestine, Rectum, Anus
Mouth function
Ingestion, chewing food to smaller pieces, salivary glands secrete amylase (breaks down carbohydrates)
Esophagus Function
Tube that carries food/liquid to stomach
Stomach Function
Physical, Chemical digestion, gastrin (hormone)released when food reaches stomach, stomach breaks down proteins (HCL,pepsin) (HCI activates pepsin, stops amylase) (Epithelial cells producing mucus prevent stomach from digesting itself)
Gastrointestinal tract (muscles)
GI tract Ranged with inner circular and outer longitudinal muscle, Peristalsis (wave-like motion) moves bolus of food through digestive tract, and sphincters control movement from one section to another
Large intestine function
Reabsorption of water & minerals, formation &storage of faeces (bacterial fermentation of indigestible materials, eg. fibre)
Rectum/Anus function
Control excretion of solid waste (Rectum stores,Anus controls release)
Prebiotic
Foods (high fibre) act as food for human microflora, Probiotic →Live microorganisms intended to maintain or improve good bacteria (normal microflora) in the body
Liver & Gall bladder
Liver produces and pancreas store bile, released for help with digestion of fat into fatty acids
Pancreas
Regulates blood sugar levels
