lecture 15 - Feasting/Fasting + Ketogenic Diet Flashcards
Feasting
When a person eats in excess of energy needs, the body stores a small amount of glycogen and much larger quantities of fat (fat = fatty acids, excess carbs and protein can broken down and stored as fat)
Short term fasting
Nutrients from meal no longer available to provide energy (2-3h after meal) body draws on glycogen and fat stores for energy
Long term fasting
Day or longer, body will begin to break down fat (fat to fatty acids to ketones) along with body protein for energy (Amino acids to glucose to ketone)
Ketones
Can be used as energy source (better energy source for brain as easily cross blood brain barrier) (Used when body doesn’t receive enough glucose)
Nutritional Ketosis
Carbohydrate-restricted ketosis, sugar-restricted diet (increases ketone production) along with supplement ketosis (increased ketone level by a drink/supplement
Ketogenic diet purpose
Weight loss, build muscle (Issues is loss of muscle in early stage as drawn on for energy low fibre, dyslipidemia (imbalance of lipids, high cholesterol) people have low compliance to diet (Less carbs, Much more fat, Similar protein → More fat in diet along with less carbs helps with reducing hunger)
