lecture 20 Flashcards
where does the spinal cord start and end
starts at the foramen magnum and ends at the inferior boarder of the 1st lumbar vertebrae.
what does the conus medularis do?
it is a triangular non neural tissue on the end of the spinal cord that provides a connection point for the filum terminale
what does filum terminale do
extends from conus
medularis to end of spinal cavity
- Anchors the spinal cord preventing it from moving and becoming damaged
- Fibrous, non-neural tissue
what is the large collection of spinal nerves inferior to the spinal cord and why is it here
its the Cauda Equina, it exits as the spinal nerves must travel to their appropriate exit which is based on their spinal cord origin level.
what would happen if there was damage to the ventral horn
Paralysis of muscles supplied by somatic motor neurons from this spinal cord segment, on same side only
what would happen if there was damage to the dorsal root
Loss of sensation from regions of the body supplied by by sensory
neurons from this spinal cord segment, on same side only.
Rami communicans are only found where and why
only from thoracolumbar section, T1 to L2. as this is the location of the sympathetic nervous system, so the sympathetic chain ganglion are only here, rami communicans connect the ganglia to the spinal nerve.
whats the ventral ramus
a branch of the spinal nerve, this is where efferent information goes to the ventral body and the afferent information comes in from ventral body
whats the dorsal ramus
a branch of the spinal nerve where the afferent info comes in from the dorsal side of the body and efferent information goes out to dorsal body.
axons are covered in?
endoneurium
axons group to form, in a periphreal nerve
fascicle
fascicles are covered in
perineurium
fascicles bundle with blood vessels to form a what
a nerve
nerves are covered in what
epineurium
