Lecture 2- Peritoneal cavity Flashcards
abdominal and pelic cavity are
The abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity are continuous with one another- no barrier
Although the diaphragm is a divide- the oesophagus and vena cava and aorta pass through the thoracic cavity to the abdominal cavity

peritoneal cavity is made up of layers of
mesothelium- secretes serous fluid
mesothelium
- flatteend simple squamous
- basement membrane
- dense irrecular connective tissue
mesothelium produces
lubricating fluid
the peritoneal cavity lies within the
throacic cavity and envelops some viscera (organs)
intraperitoneal organs
liver, stomach and small intestine
(completely surrounded)
- Intraperitoneal structures are not actually inside the perirenal cavity- they are enveloped (like a balloon)
viscera not enveloped and lie posterior to the peritoneal cavity
retroperitoneal viscere

visceral layer
continuous with viscera
parietal viscera
outside layer
what is a mesentry
double fold of peritoneum that attaches certain viscera to the posteiror abodminal wall
- jejunum
- ileum
- appendix
- transverse colon
- sigmoid colon
- rectum
mesentries allow
- allows blood vessels and lymphatics to go from the retroperitoneal organs to the intraperitoneal without breeching the integrity of the cavity

peritoneal ligament
Double folded peritoneum connects viscera- membrane channel between the liver and the stomach (not a mesentery

Role of the peritoneal cavity
*
- Aids structure by holding the viscera in position- stops twisting
- Serous fluid reduces friction
Stomach ‘mesentery’ doesn’t class as a
mesentery! Not long enough- stomach cant move very much
