lecture 13/14 Flashcards
What does the term “Caprophagus” mean?
Eatting your own poop :D
When carp are placed within hypoxic environments, what happens to their heart rate?
Nothing. it remains constant.
What animals would be better adapted to uptake oxygen? one that has evolved in a hypoxic environment or one in a oxygen rich environment?
The one from a hypoix environment.
What is oxygen conformity?
The ability for an animal to reach optimal oxygen regulation from its environment.
The higher the concentration of O2 the more it will consume until it reaches maximum regulation.
If you lower the O2 of the enviorment what effect will that have on the body temperature of that organism?
You will lower the body temp of the animal
What will an animal do to heat up?
They will burn sugars within their body to warm up, producing lactic acid.
what is the byproduct of anaerobic metabolism?
ethonal.
what is the range of your ability to enduc metabolic rate?
10X
for a large animal vs a small aniaml who is better at using oxygen?
the smaller you are the better you are.
Who has a higher VO2 max? a smaller animal or a larger one?
A larger one, simply due to volume of O2 able to be consumed.
True or false:
Endotherms can have variable levels of oxygen usage.
True.
As you go higher up in altitude, what happens to your rate of O2 consummation?
Your rate of O2 consumption decreases as the O2 levels in the air also decrease. thus decreasing your ability to breath and further your ability to maintain metabolic function.
What process is directly effected from the removal of oxygen from an environment?
Oxidation phosphorylation.
What oxi.phos is ineffecent you produce more______
Heat
What product is being produced when an organism is in a oxygen deprived environment?
Lactic acid.
