Lec 12 Flashcards
Adulthood
Why is divorce more manageable in later adulthood?
Kids grown up, stable careers
What is the sandwich generation and how does this differ from the generic pattern?
The sandwich generation is adults who have to take care of their kids and parents at the same time, whereas the general trend is parents take care of the kids until the kids take care of the parents
What are some cognitive changes associated with middle adulthood?
What happens to IQ scores 35 onwards?
They deteriorate
What type of research is done for IQ scores over generations? Why is this significant?
Cross sectional research may allow for cohort effects where younger people with more access to education may score better.
What does longitudinal IQ testing say about aging?
It gets better with age.
What are crystalized skills? What gender has a generally poorer retention of them?
They are stored knowledge and abilities and generally decline earlier in men.
What are fluid skills? What gender has a generally poorer retention of them?
Fluid intelligence shows the ability to think and reason flexibly, and declines earlier in women.
What component of intelligence generally worsens faster?
Fluid intelligence
What happens with multitasking and attention as you age?
It worsens
At what age does reaction time start to improve?
20
What is the difference between the neural network view and information loss view?
Neural network view states that the brain makes new synaptic connections that are less efficient than the broken ones, the information loss view is that the brain has to slow down to process with less information present with age
What is inhibition of responses associated with?
It worsens with age, and is a part of attention
What part of memory decreases starting at 20
Working memory
What are two strategies to help with attention and memory?
- Slowing down the pace of learning
- Practicing with attentional demands
