More than half of drop outs graduated from another school, only 2.5% were unemployed, 2/3 identified typical reasons, 1/3 mentioned negative circumstances
Why do gender stereotypes influence the vocational choice of developing people?
Adolescent messaging decreases female confidence
Males are concerned with succeeding in male-dominated fields and managing a career and family
What Erikson stage crisis is generally significant for adulthood?
Intimacy vs. Isolation
What is the mature balance of dealing with the Intimacy vs. isolation in Erikson’s theory?
Balancing the desire for self-determination vs. desire for intimacy
What is the stage that occurs just before adulthood?
Identity vs. role confusion
What is identity moratorium?
It is the search for identity
What do we select partners based off of?
Biological/ Social factors (similar is favored)
What do women (not on birth control pills) select for smell?
Optimally different MHC smells to their own
What are women general criteria for choosing a man?
- Intelligence, ambition, financial status, morality
- Generally a bit older
What are men general criteria for choosing a woman?
- Emphasize physical attractiveness, domestic skills
- Generally a bit younger
What is the highest value factor in a relationship?
Relationship satisfaction is the most important thing
What genders typically tend to prefer doing activities or just talk?
Males like activities, females like to talk
Are sibling relationships important in adult psychological well being?
Yes
What are the trends in children leaving the home?
- Average age decreasing
- Many adults return briefly (boomerang kids)
- It is less common to leave the home to marry
What is departure from the house linked to?
When they are prepared, more successful parent-children relationships occur, and there is successful transition to adult roles
What can we say about marriage rates?
They are less common but still dominant, they are happening older, 40% end in divorce
What is associated with marital satisfaction?
Family background, later age of marriage, relationship to extended families, personailities
In industrialized countries:
equal power in the relationship, sharing of family responsibilities
What trends are seen in cohabitation?
Men who cohabited before engagement were less dedicated to their wives.
What are the key factors for the decision to have children?
- Financial Circumstances
- Personal/Religious values
- Health conditions
What are trends in women that choose not to have children?
- Less traditional gender identity
- High status education/job
What is the correlation between babies and marital problems?
Baby typically does not cause problems unless marriage is already troubled
What does shared caregiving predict?
Higher parental happiness and sensitivity to the baby
What can we say about the rates of never married 30-34 year olds?
High increase
What are demographic trends associated with divorce?
- Younger at marriage
- Parents who divorced
- Low SES
- Low education
What are the strongest predictors of divorce?
Infidelity, Spending foolishly, and substance abuse
