LATG Ch 2 Facility Management Flashcards
General Responsibilities
managing space/equipment, inventory control, recordkeeping, SOP’s, procurement
The role of an animal facility
provide researchers with an animal housing environment that meets the requirements of the research being conducted
Project management
Initiative: nature and scope of project
Planning:map out time, costs resources, estimate time
Execution: ensure plan objectives implemented
Monitoring and controlling: processes performed to observe the execution of the project so problems can be identified
Closing: project is accepted after completing objectives; review
Centralized
make it easier for regulatory compliance and oversight
decentralized
more convenient for PIs; closer to labs and separation of diff groups of animals limit spread of disease.
Personnel cost
60% of all costs
per diem rates
a rate per quantity of service, and time and materials; recover costs of housing animals
equation
(labor cost + supplies cost) ÷ average daily census (cages or animals) ÷ 365 days = cost/animal or cage/day
rat housing 144in2
Mouse housing 75in2=$1.00/day
$1.00/75=0.013*144= $1.92 to house rat
rabbit housing
one room can house 350 mouse cages
Using the same numbers above for mice:
•if the room can house 350 mouse cages, ◦the maximum annual revenue for the room is equal to $127,750
◦($1.00/cage/day x 350 cages x 365 days).
•If the same space can house 36 rabbit cages, ◦the per diem rate for rabbits would be $9.72/cage/day
◦($127,750 ÷ 365 days ÷ 36 cages).
salary costs
$45,000 and $35,000 salary = 80000*2=160,000
Salary 65%Costs
160,000/0.65=246153/365days/2000cages = $0.33/cage/day
how many hours in a year
2080 hours in a work year
how many hours in a year
2080 hours in a work year
40hr/week* 52 weeks/year
labor costs with animal cost
Using the same labor costs as described above:
35 minutes of work is equal to $15.70 ($26.92/hour ÷ 35 minutes ÷ 60 minutes/hour).
If the supplies for 15 animals cost $15, then the total cost for 15 animals equals $30.70 or $2.05 per animal
($15.70 in labor + $15 in supplies = $30.70 total cost for 15 animals).
internal vs external customer rates
For example, if the rate to house a mouse cage for an internal customer is $1.00 per cage per day and the institution provides a 20% subsidy and has a 38% indirect cost rate with the Federal Government, the rate for the external customer would be $2.02 per cage per day ($1.00 ÷ 0.8 ÷ 0.62).
