LATG Ch 17. Anesthesia Flashcards
Ch 17.
General anesthesia
state in which the animal is unconscious to pain and sensation, and the body is immobile
Analgesia
alleviation of pain
nociceptors
Specialized nerve endings in tissues that transmit signals to the brain
Stage 1
Voluntary movement. This stage typically lasts from the initial administration of an anesthetic until loss of consciousness occurs
Stage 2
Delirium or involuntary movement. the animal loses voluntary control of movement with reflexes still present
Stage 3
Surgical anesthesia; Breathing initiated in the thoracic-abdominal area
Light plane
The light plane is characterized by eyeball movement and responses of skeletal muscle reflexes.
Medium plane
Suitable for surgical procedures
Deep plane
Respiration is severely depressed
Stage 4
CNS depression over dose and death follow if not resuscitated.
Phenothiazine Tranquilizers
group include acepromazine maleate and chlorpromazin, acepromazine, peripheral vasodilation
Alpha-2 Adrenergic Agonists.
Xylazine and dexmedetomidine are sedatives that also have analgesic properties; heart rate and blood pressure in peripheral vessels
Benzodiazepine Tranquilizers
diazepam and midazolam;minimal tranquilization and sedation no analgesicx
Tribromoethanol
stored briefly in the dark at 4° ;short-term anesthesia and analgesia, which is sufficient for the surgery time of implanting embryos; Intestinal ileus
dissociative anesthesia
muscular tone (catalepsy) Respiratory depression is mild, and analgesia is limited. salivation is large animals
