labs 2-4 Flashcards
what are the 5 types of splints and what are they used for
cervical collar
malleable finger spint
vacuum splint - used to stabilise
box / speed splint - used on lower leg fractures
sam splint - forearm / wrist fracture
who should stabilise a fracture
person with the highest medical training
- stabilise at proximal and distal joints
what are the main points of the sam splint
measure length on unaffected arm from MCP to elbow
use 4 stabilising clothes (2 above and 2 below)
what are the main points of the box splint
can leave shoe on
4 stabilising clothes (2 above and 2 below)
what are the 2 main processes used in choking
back blows - vibration to dislodge
heimlich - pressure to bring object up
what is the process if someone is choking
see signs and symptoms
consent to help
do 5 back blows, check for object
begin heimlich if not
continue and check in between
what is the process for choking if the person is pregnant, in a wheelchair, and/or much larger than you
keep everything the same but can really only do back blows
what is the process for choking if the person is taller than you
back blows and heimlich with the person on their knees
what is the process for choking when they are an infant
lay them in your arm
back blows while face down
sternal compressiosn with 2 fingers while face up
what are the 5 Rs of an epipen
- right person - check name
- right dose - has it been used?
- right time - expired? (can still administer if yes)
- right medication - is it an epipen
- right method - blue to the sky, orange to the thigh
where should an epipen be administered
anterior lateral portion of thigh
reach across the person to opposite side for more control
hold for 30 sec
communicate with the person what you’re doing
what is the preferred recovery position method and why
pull method
- more controlled pulling them towards you rather than pushing them away
what is the process for recovery position
- approach
- check breathing and consciousness
- call ems
- CPR if not breathing
- if breathing and no suspected c spine injury then recovery position
what is the process of c spine stabilisation
- approach, stay in line of sight so they don’t have to move
- check breathing and consciousness
- monitor breathing
- don’t take helmet off if not trained
- communicate
what are the 2 processes of c spine stabilisation
anterior stabilisation
- 4 points of contact
- ground and chest with elbows
- forehead and jaw with hands
MILS (manual in line stabilisation)
- cupping under ears
- grasping forehead and jaw
- ground elbows on something
