FAIR (key concepts) Flashcards
what is the standard approach to injury on the field of play
DR ABC
D = danger - safe to approach, address hazards
R = response - level of responsiveness
Airway, Breathing, Circulation
which of the ABCs is the absolute priority
airway
- can’t have B or C without A
how to manage head injuries
MILS
DR ABC
unconscious = maintain MILS and get help
combative = let go and talk them down
conscious = make assessment for neck injury
remove from play, medical assessment, don’t leave them alone
what are the two ways to manage an airway
jaw thrust
head tilt
what is a jaw thrust
lifting the jaw forwards to pull the tongue forwards and away from the back of the throat
use in any head / neck injury because there is little neck mvmt
what is a head tilt chin lift
tilt head bwd and lift chin fwd to move tongue away from the back of the throat
not recommended in neck injuries because of head mvmt
how to assess for breathing
open the airway
look for the chest rising
listen for air
feel air on cheek
is the injured player pink or blue?
are both sides of the chest moving equally?
is breathing fast or slow?
what are the 3 types of shock
hemorragic shock - more common (not enough blood in circulation to maintain BP)
neurogenic shock - spinal cord injury interrupts the nerve supply to arteries so they dilate and BP falls
cardiogenic shock - heart failure
(concussion = more common cause of confusion than shock)
how to assess circulation
assess skin temp and colour
assess function - brain, skin, lungs
any obvius external bleeding?
what are they complaining of and where is the pain
pulse checks are difficult to use
what is the process of CPR
compression 100/min
depth at least 2 inches
minimise interruptions
allwo complete chest recoil
30 compressions and 2 breaths
when can you stop CPR
player shows signs of life AND starts to breathe normally
someone more qualified takes over (ex: ems)
you are too exhausted and can’t carry on
what is involved in decision to remove a player from the field
never feel pressure to move an injured player
use judgement to decide if the game should stop while awaiting trained medical assistance
