LAB Neck and Submandibular II Flashcards
(35 cards)
Where does the thymus gland sit?
Behind the manubrium and upper part of the sternum
What area risks infection when there is damage to the pharynx?
The prevertebral (retrovisceral or retropharyngeal space) space
What is the thymus gland populated with?
Lymphocyte precursor cells that give rise to circulating T-lymphocytes
What side does the aorta come?
The left
What branches off of the aorta in order from left to right?
Left subclavian
Left common carotid
Brachiocephalic trunk (further divides into the right common carotid and the right subclavian)
Where do the two brachiocephalic veins join to form the superior vena cava?
At the right margin of the manubrium
What side is the vena cava on?
Right
Where is the thoracic duct?
Anterior to the left vertebral artery and behind the carotid sheath
What does the thoracic duct drain into?
The left subclavian vein
Where is the phrenic nerve located?
On top of the anterior scalene muscle
C3,4 and 5
What muscles does the subclavian artery and brachial plexus pass between?
The middle and anterior scalene muscles
Where is the subclavian vein found?
Anterior to the anterior scalene muscle
Where does the internal thoracic artery take origin?
The subclavian artery
Where does the thyrocervical trunk take origin?
Off of the subclavian artery?
What three vessels does the thyrocervical trunk give rise to?
Inferior thyroid
Transverse cervical
Suprascapular
Where does the vertebral artery take origin?
From the subclavian and passes posterior lay to ascend in the transverse foramen of upper 6 cervical vertebra
First branch of the subclavian going up before the thyrocervical trunk
What are the branches of the thyrocervical trunk in order?
Suprascapular
Transverse cervical
Inferior thyroid
Where does the thyroid gland originate during development and where does it end up?
Develops in the mouth
Generally overlies the 3rd and 4th tracheal rings
What nerve runs medial and posterior to the thyroid gland?
The reccurent laryngeal nerve
What nerve is susceptible to injury during thyroid surgery?
The recurrent laryngeal nerve
What does the reccurrent laryngeal nerve run under on the left side of the body?
The aorta
What does the reccurrent laryngeal nerve run under on the right side of the body?
The subclavian artery
What is the recurrent laryngeal nerve a branch of?
The vagus nerve
What fascia surrounds the thyroid cartilage?
The visceral fascia or pretracheal
