Brainstem Flashcards
What sulcus and funiculus is only present above T6?
Dorsal intermediate sulcus
Fasciculus cuneate
What marks left and right sides of the dorsal spinal cord?
Dorsal median sulcus
Where is the spinal thalamic tract STT located?
Right off of the ventral horn
What is Lissauer’s tract and where is it located?
Also called dorsolateral fasciculus of Lissauer
Located right off of the dorsal horn next to the fasciculus gracillus
First order pain and temperature neurons that ascend or descend one or two segments and terminate in the dorsal horn
Where do the axons from the STT have their cel bodies?
In the contralateral posterior(dorsal) horn
What information does the STT carry?
Second order pain and temperature
Where does the STT cross the midline?
The anterior white commissure
Where does the STT terminate?
VPL of the thalamus
What information does the F. Gracillus and F. Cuneate carry?
Proprioceptive, discrimitive touch, and vibration
From the lower body and upper body respectively
Where to the axons in the F. Gracillus and F. Cuneate have their cell bodies?
In the DRG
Where do the F. Gracillus and F. Cuneate terminate?
In the caudal medulla
Both ipsilateral
What color are the nucleuses in the stained cross sections?
White, while the tracts are more purple and more lateral
The nucleus of what CN is in the caudal medulla?
The spinal nucleus of CN V
What does the spinal nucleus of CN V contain?
The cell bodies of the second order neurons of pain and temp neurons that cross the midline to ascend to the VPM
What does the spinal tract of CN V contain?
First order neurons from the trigeminal ganglion
What information does the spinal tract of CN V carry?
Pain, temp, and crude touch sensation
What does the spinal tract of CN V pass through to enter the brainstem?
The middle cerebellar peduncle
Where does the medial lemniscus begin?
The caudal medulla
What does the medial lemniscus carry?
Second order neurons whose cell bodies are located in the gracile and cuneate nucleus of the caudal medulla
Propreoceptive, touch, and vibration from contralateral body to the thalamus (VPM)
Where does the STT terminate?
VPL
Where are the mesencephalic and main sensory nucleuses located?
In the pons by the fourth ventricle
In the pons, where is the STT in relation to the medial lemniscus?
Directly lateral
Where does the medial lemniscus terminate?
The VPM
Where is the medial lemniscus in the midbrain?
On the outside
What does the trigeminothalamic tract contain?
Second order neurons whose cell bodies are located in the spinal trigeminal nucleus and the main sensory nucleus
Terminate in the VPM
Where do the internal arcuate fibers come from and go, and in what section?
Axons of second order neurons from the gracile and cuneate nucleuses going to the medial lemniscus
What would a lesion in the inferior colliculus in the midbrain do?
Diminished hearing
Where does the the sensory info like touch cross?
(Gracile, cuneate)
Lower medulla
What brainstem nuclei carries sensory information from the teeth?
The main sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve
