L20: Learning Disabilities Flashcards
Specific Learning Disorder (SLD)
Impairment in reading, written expression, and math
DSM 5 Criteria for SLD
Struggle using academic skills w/ 1+ of the following for 6+ months:
- Difficulty with:
a. reading comprehension (inacurate/effortful), spelling, written expression,
b. mastering numbers, calculations, mathematical reasoning - academic skills are substantially and quantifiably below expectation based on age
- difficulties start in school-age years
How do we determine when the affected academic skills are substantially and quantifiably below expectation based on age
A) Discrepancy Model
B) Response to Intervention
Discrepancy Model
compare student’s IQ to their academic achievement
Response to Intervention
try 2 targeted interventions first, then assess for SLD
Which one is better: Discrepancy Model or Response to Intervention?
Response to Intervention is better
Why Discrepancy Model is flawed
- Rarely identify students with learning disabilities in early grades.
- Does not assess or inform the quality of instruction received by students;
- -> is it a disability or a lack of quality teaching/schooling?
- -> You cannot qualify for SLD if you haven’t received “adequate instruction”
- -> Giving Spanish student English instructions
- Provides no info about what skills to target to help improve.
- Based on IQ scores
Why Response to Intervention is better:
- Helps us identify students earlier
- Assesses the quality of instruction student receives
- Provides information about what skills to target for student moving forward
- Gives student opportunity to learn and practice before declaring them as having a disability
- Truly a more thorough assessment
