What are the two most common forms of eating disorders
Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa
What are the cores of both most common eating disorder
- an intense and pathological fear of becoming overweight and fat
- a pursuit of thinness that is relentless and sometimes deadly
Eating disorders co-occur with what
Clinical depression, OCD, substance use disorders, 50% have anxiety disorder
Anorexia Nervosa
Refusal to maintain normal body weight that // with age and height
Intense fear of gaining weight, despite being underweight; persistent behaviors that interfere with weight gain
Distortions in the perception of one’s body weight or shape, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight
Typically restricting food intake
Types of Anorexia Nervosa
Restricting type, binge/purge
Bulimia Nervosa
Having normal weight and eating more than normal because it doesn’t feel like it’s enough AND THEN throwing it all up.
Must occur once a week for 3 months
What does Bulimia Nervosa have that Anorexia Nervosa doesn’t?
Bulimia Nervosa is normal weight.
Types of Bulimia Nervosa
Non-purging, Purging
Side effects of bulimia Nervosa
Renal, Gastrointestinal, Electrolyte, Laxative Abuse Complications
Dental Problems

Throwing up food to avoid weight gain
Non-purging
Exercise to avoid the weight gain
Difference between Anorexia and bulimia
Anorexia:
- Severity judged by BMI
- Strong 100% control over food intake

- Self-starvation –> 15%+ ideal body weight loss
Bulimia:
- Severity is judged by number of purging episodes per week
- Feeling out of control over eating
- At normal weight or above
Binge Eating Disorder
Recurring episodes of eating too much in a discrete period of time
- ex. normal person and this person eat lunch for 45 minutes, but normal person only eats one plate, the other eats 3.
= bulimia without the purging
how in Binge Earring Disorder different from bulimia?
Binge eating is not associated with the recurrent use of inaaporopriate compensatory behaviors
ex. purging
Causes of Eating Disorder
a. Biological:
- Genetics
- Odd serotonin and dopamine activity
- Hypothalamus: –> Lateral side produces hunger
- -> Ventromedial side reduces hunger
b. Societal and psychological:
- Perfectionism
- Most start with normal dieting
- Social pressure
- Food as coping mechanism
- History of sexual abuse
- Occupational factors
