Social Group
Collection of individuals who see themselves as members of the same social category.
Personal Identity
Part of an individual’s self-concept derived from individual characteristics
ex. humor, competence
Social Identity
that part of an individual’s self-concept which derives from
his membership in a social group together
with the value and emotional significance attaches to that membership
ex. groups based on race, gender, and occupation)
Sociall Identity Theory
“people are motivated to seek positive social identity by comparing in-groups favourably with out-groups.”
Gender
The attitudes, feelings and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person’s biological sex.
Gender-normative
Behavior that is compatible with cultural expectations
Gender non-conformity
Behaviors that are viewed as incompatible with these expectations constitute
Gender identity
One’s sense of oneself as male, female or something else.
When one’s gender identity and biological sex are not congruent, the individual may identify along the transgender spectrum.
Genderqueer
a person whose gender identity falls outside of the gender binary
Sometimes use “gender fluid” as an identifier but typically reject the term “transgender” because it implies a change from one gender category to another.
Feminism
Political, economic, and cultural equality of women
Sexism
Prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination on the basis of sex
Cisgenderism
“the cultural and systemic ideology that denies, denigrates, or pathologizes self-identified gender identities that do not align with assigned gender at birth as well as resulting behavior, expression, and community.”
First wave of feminism movement (19th, early 20th century)
Property rights and the right to vote
Second wave of feminism movement (1960s to the late 1980s)
Equality and anti-discrimination
Third wave of feminism movement (1990s)
started as a backlash to the second waves privileging of white, straight women.
