What are the different determinants that predict if people are active as they age (first 3)
- Demographic and biological factors:
Age and gender:
- older we get = less active
- As we age men stay more active than woman
Socioeconomic status
- Higher socioeconomic status (more money and education) = more likely to be more physically active
- behavioural attributes
- Small relationship between if your physical active when your young correlating to being physically active when old
- team based competitive activities decline with age more than individual non competitive activities
- Social and cultural factors
- Social support can cause increased physical activity
-Phycial activity group that are closer to each other = higher attendance rates
- The instructor influences the amount of enjoyment the people have
- Cultural beliefs can affect involvement in physical activity

- Physical environment
- Difficulty getting to the facility
- Cost
- unappealing activities - Physiological, cognitive and emotional factors
- perceived control, expected benefits, self efficacy
- Most common that affect exercise are enjoyment and perceived health benefits
Explain Rowe and Kahn’s model of successful ageing
- Absense of chronic disease
- Maintenance of cognitive and physical functioning
- Active engagement in day to day activities (life behavioural choices)
Explain some flaws with the model of successful ageing. Explain the new view of successful ageing
- Having a chronic illness doesn’t mean you can’t thrive
- Cognitive and physical functioning will decrease as you age, but doesn’t man you can’t have high quality of life
- Adapting in a positive ways to changes that happen to us. eg changing intensity or type of exercise as we age
Explain how to promote physical activity in later life
- Show positive roll models (masters athletes)
- Provide appropriate types/leveles of physical activity
- Don’t belittle their efforts
- understand everyones reasons for participating in physical activity
