Kidneys & control of water balance Flashcards
how does illness affect osmoregulation
illnesses that cause fever, vomiting, and diarrhea can result in dehydration which lowers the bloods water concentration levels.
why is too much salt bad for osmoregulation
makes the blood ion concentration too high
how does exhalation affect osmoregulation
when we expire, water in the lungs leave our body in the breath
how does sweating affect osmoregulation
water, ions, and urea are lost in sweat
why must ion levels be kept relatively constant
in order to control diffusion and osmosis between body cells
which body part monitors the volume of water in the blood
Hypothalamus
how is Urea formed
when the digestion of proteins forms excess amino acids which can’t be stored in the body
what is deamination
the excess amino acids undergo this process in the liver to produce ammonia which is then converted into urea which is then excreted as urine.
why is urea toxic
too much urea in the bloodstream can harm cells and tissues
