CVD Flashcards
What is an atheroma
Fibrous plaque build up in arteries due ti deposition of WBC and lipids narrowing lumen, restricting blood flow, increasing blood pressure and damaging endothelium
What is Thrombosis
Artery walls can burst open due to damage
Platelets are then released into the bloodstream to the damaged area
Platelets accumulate at the damaged area to form clots which restrict blood flow in the artery
What is an Aneurysm
Constant high Blood pressure can cause elastic fibres to swell up
Why is smoking a risk factor
Carbon monoxide found in cigarettes reduces the amount of oxygen carried by haemoglobin carried in the blood as CO binds to the haemoglobin
This can cause a heart attack
Factors contributing to high blood pressure
High blood pressure can be inherited or can be caused by obesity or excessive drinking
Diet?
A diet consisting of many saturated fats and salts can induce high blood cholesterol levels
