controlling ventilation rate Flashcards
what is ventilation rate controlled by
the ventilation centre in the medulla oblongata
what are the functions of central chemoreceptors
chemoreceptors dtect changes in blood pH levels
when Carbon Dioxide is prodiced during respiration, it is acidic
the cemoreceptors detect this increased acidity and signal to increase ventilation rate
what are the peripheral chemoreceptors
they are located in the arteries
they detect changes in the chemical composition in the blood and signal accordingly to slow down or speed up ventilation rate
what does an increased ventilation rate do to oxygen delivery
it increases the rate at which oxygen is delivered to respiring tissues and the removal of waste products
this is important during exercise due to the fact that tissues will be respiring quicker
