Diffusion Flashcards
what is diffusion
net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration and it is a passive process as it doesnt require energy
what is an example of diffusion in cells
CO2, O2, and urea moving in and out of cells across cell membranes via diffusion
what is fascilitated diffusion
net movement of particles down a concentration gradient
what are polar molecules
they move across a membrane via fascillitated diffusion as they are too large to move through the membrane
they are repelled by the hydrophobic part of the membrane
what are channel proteins
fascillitated diffusion takes place through them
they allow polar molecules to avoid the non polar part of the plasma membrane which will prevent entry
what are Aquaporins
channel proteins that allow water to enter through the plasma membrane
what are carrier proteins
when a substanec binds to them, they change shape allowing the substance to move from the outside to the inside of the cell
