blood vessels Flashcards
what are arterioles
they are smaller divisions of srteries after they reach an organ
what are arteries
they are responsible for transporting blood from the heart to the rest of the organs
they have walls with thick layers of muscle which maintain a high pressure for efficient blood flow around the body
how are arteries able to stretch
due to then folded endothelium and elastic fibres
what are veins
they bring blood back to the heart
they have a wider lumen than the arteries allowing bloock to travel at low pressures
they also have thin muscle fibres and elastic fibres
they contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood
what are cappillaries
they pass close to body cells allowing for gas exchange between bood and organs
