Heart Flashcards
Function of right and left atria
Right- receives deoxygenated blood from the body via vena cava
Left- receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via pulmonary vein
Function of ventricles
Right- receives deoxygenated blood from the right atrium
Left- receives oxygenated blood from the left atrium
Function of pulmonary artery and vein
Artery - carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
Vein - carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium
Function of Vena cava and Aorta
Aorta - carries oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body
Vena cava - return deoxygenated blood used by body to the right atrium
Function of semi lunar valves
Prevent back flow of blood into ventricles
Function of atrioventricular valves
Prevent back flow of blood into the atria
What is atrial contraction
Pressure in the atria increase when they contract
This forces blood into the ventricles
What is ventricular contraction
The atria relax and the ventricles contract causing an increase in pressure in the ventricles
Atrioventricular valves snap shut to prevent back flow of blood into the relaxed atria
Pulmonary artery and aorta fill with blood
What is relaxtion
Semi lunar valves snap shut due to high pressure in aorta and pulmonary artery to prevent back flow of blood into the relaxed ventricles
