kidney transplants & Dialysis Flashcards
how does dialysis work
a patient with kidney failure is connected to the dialysis machone
the blood from the patient enters the dalysis machine
the dialysis fluid contains optimum potassium and sodium ion levels
the patients blood passes through a partially permeable mambrane in the machine which replicates a kidney tubule.
the dialysis fluid on the other side establishes a concentration gradient which allows excess salts and urea to diffuse from the patient blood to the dialysis fluid
what are some disadvantages of diaysis treament
needed multiple times a week
exspensive
increases risk of blood clots and infections
what are some advantages of kidney dialysis
gives the patient time to find a donor kidney
life saving process
why do patients have to take immunosuppressants after a kidney transplant
they suppress the immune system preventing it from trying to destry the foreign cells present in the kidney
what are the disadvantages of kidney transplants
patient may have to take immunosupressants leaving them vulnerable to oter infections
patients may have to wait a very long time to find a tissue match
the body may reject te kidney
what are the advantages of kidney transplants
the patient wont need dialysis treatment
they are cheaper long term compared to dialysis treatment
