Coordination Of Heart Action Flashcards
What is the sinoatrial node
Located in the wall of the right atrium
it acts as the hearts pacemaker buy transmitting waves of electrical activity along the atria walls ate regular intervals
How do the electrical waves affect atria contraction
The electrical waves induce simultaneous contraction of both atria forcing blood into the ventricles
Why is there a delay in in electrical activity of atria
Electrical activity cant pass from atria to ventricles due to non conducting tissue
Why is the delay in electrical activity important
It ensures the atria is empty before the ventricles contract
What is the function of the atrioventricular node
Carries electrical impulses to the ventricles after the delay to ensure the ventricles are full with blood
What happens after the electrical impulse passes through the AVN node
It goes to the bundle of his which is a group of conducting tissue that transmits the electrical impulses to the hearts apex and then around the ventricles walls along the purkyn fibres
What happens after the electrical impulse pass along the purkyne fibres
The ventricles contract simultaneously forcing blood out of the aorta and pulmonary artery
