key schizophrenia studies Flashcards
What did Reichmann believe?
Reichmann believed that disordered families, and schizophrengenic mothers resulted in SZ children.
Schizophrengenic mothers have similar characteristics, they are cold, moralistic and overprotective
How did Waring and Ricks contradict Reichmann?
Waring and Ricks disagreed with Reichmans characteristics by claiming that mothers of Sz were shy, anxious and withdrawn and generally found no difference between mothers of SZ children and mothers of children without SZ
What did Bateson et al propose?
Bateson proposed the double bind theory which suggests that contradictory messages in childhood can lead to the development of SZ
Kalafi and Torabi?
Kalafi and Toarbi studied relapse rates in Iran where there is a high prevalence of EE in Iranian cultures which is thought to be one of the main causes of relapse as negative emotions and stress can trigger an SZ episode
How do Bowie and Harvey support the cognitive approach to SZ?
Bowie and Harvey discovered that cognitive impairments are one of the core factors of SZ as they are prevalent throughout the illness and affect main parts of SZ such as attention and working memory.
What did Fioana Pharoh suggest?
Fioana Pharoh suggested strategies to reduce stress in family and reduce EE
This involves reducing anger and guilty, managing how to care for Sz and balancing your own life and improving beliefs towards SZ
Tarruer et al for support for CBT and drug therapy/ Interactionist approach
Tarruer et al compared CBT/Drug therapy alone to combined treatment and found that schizophrenics had a large reduction of symptoms when using both
What did Trower et al find about CBT? Does this support/challenge the approach?
Trower et al (2004) reported that CBT does not reduce hallucinations but make them seem less of a threat and generally not tackling the problem at its core.
What is Meehls model?
Meehel proposed the idea that the diathesis was entirely genetic and the result of a schizogene which develops a schizotpic personality which makes you more vulnerable to stress and therefore SZ in general.
No matter how severe your stress is, if you do not have this gene you can not get SZ
Hogarty et al in the interactionist approach
Assessed the relapse rates of 103 schizoprenics in high EE families who recieved combined treatments had 0% relapse rates for the first year in comparison to singular treatments which did have relapse rates.
However, a follow up study found that it only delayed relapse and not prevent it
Davison et al ( Typical antipsychotics )
Typical antipsychotics side effects can lead to paitents not wanting to take the drug leading to relapse, however lowering the dosage can have the same effect.
