What is done on Friday evening BEFORE sunset?
All the work is done and the home is prepared before Shabbat begins. The house is cleaned, the food is prepared, and the family washes and changes into clean, smart clothes.
What happens to the dinner table?
It is set with the best cutlery and crockery, and at least two candles.
What is Challah?
A type of bread made of eggs which is usually braided and eaten on Shabbat.
What is placed on the table food-wise?
Some wine or grape juice and two loaves of challah.
Who lights the candles?
A female member of the family (usually the wife and mother) has the honor of lighting the candles.
When are the candles lit?
18 minutes before sunset. This is when Shabbat us welcomed into the home.
After the Friday service, what does the family do before the meal.
They bless the children and the head of the family recites the kiddush blessing. Each family member then washes their hands before taking their places at the dinner table.
Why are the hands washed before the Friday meal?
As an act of purification.
what happens to the bread at the meal?
It is cut into slices, dipped in or sprinkled with salt and then passed around to the whole family.
What happens after each course?
Stories from the scriptures might be told to the children or songs might be sung.
How does the meal end?
With a prayer of thanksgiving.
What happens Saturday afternoon?
The parents spend family time with the children and study the Torah.
The end of Shabbat is marked by what?
The havdalah service.
