What are the strict Jewish dietary laws called?
They are called the Kosher laws.
What is food allowed by Jewish rules called?
It is called kosher food.
What is food not allowed by Jewish rules called?
They are called trefah, which means ‘torn’.
Why is trefah food called that. (It means torn)
Because it originally referred to animals whose flesh had been torn by a predator and so couldn’t be eaten.
Where in the Torah are the kosher laws found?
Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.
Why were the kosher laws invented?
Whilst there is no reason given in the Torah, it is speculated that they were originally for hygiene or health reasons.
What do Orthodox Jews do about the kosher laws?
They follow them strictly.
What do Reform Jews do about the kosher laws.
The believe they are outdated. Followers of reform Judaism choose whether they want to follow them or not.
If meat is to be eaten, how must it be prepared?
The animal must be healthy and slaughtered with a very sharp knife by a trained Jew. The animal’s throat is cut so it does not suffer. Blood is drained. Other parts are removed as well.
Name 5 kosher foods
Goat, cows, sheep, deer, salmon, tuna, carp, herring, cod, fruit, vegetables, some cheese.
Name 5 trefah foods
pork, camel, rodents, reptiles, crabs, prawns, lobsters, oysters, clams, some cheese, insects, frogs, amphibians.
Certain combinations of food are forbidden. Such as dairy products and meat. Why is this?
Because in Exodus 23:19 it says ‘you shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.’
What do Jews do to make sure they follow the kosher laws?
They cook in multiple different sinks and worksurfaces. They may also color-code their utensils, cutlery and crockery.
