When a Jew is nearing death, what does their family do and why?
They try to visit them as frequent as possible and make sure there is always someone with them so they don’t die alone.
What do Jews do when they hear of the death of a loved one?
They follow the example of Jacob (Genesis 37:34) and make a small tear in their clothes.
What do Jews say to show they accept the passing of a loved one.
‘Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the Universe.’
When do Jews believe the soul leaves the body.
At the burial, not at death.
During the first period of mourning, what do the family do?
Whatever they like. They are left to grieve without having to follow certain religious rules.
What marks the end of the immediate mourning period?
Family or close friends will bring them a meal consisting of bread and eggs. This symbolizes new life.
What begins on the day of the burial? What is it?
Shiva. It is a 7 day period of intense mourning.
What happens during Shiva?
Mourners stay at home
They don’t wear leather shoes
They don’t sit on chairs
They don’t cut their hair
They don’t wear makeup
They don’t do any work
They cover mirrors as not to focus on their appearance.
They wear the clothes they tore.
They recite the Kaddish
Say lots of prayers
What happens after Shiva?
There is a lesser period of mourning. This lasts 30 days.
What happens during the time of lesser mourning?
Normal life resumes. Male mourners say the Kaddish daily.
How long does the final period of mourning last?
11 months.
What happens during the final period of mourning?
Mourners do not attend parties.
What happens funeral-wise?
Most Jews are buried within 24 hours of their death. Occasionally they are cremated but Jews prefer a burial.
How is the body prepared for burial?
It is washed and wrapped in a plain linen cloth. As well as a tallit for men.
Where is the body placed?
in a simple coffin to show that everyone is equal in death.
