What does Rosh Hashanah celebrate?
Jewish new year.
What are the ‘days of awe’?
The ten days beginning with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur and the Day of Atonement.
What does Rosh Hashanah recall?
It recalls the creation story in Genesis; its considered to be the anniversary of when God created humans.
What does God do on Rosh Hashanah?
He weighs up people’s good and bad deeds and judges them.
What’s the point of God judging people on Rosh Hashanah?
It is to decide their fortune for the next year.
How can the judgement be influenced? What is done?
by the actions taken during the festival. So Jews pray, do works of charity and try to atone for any harm or upset they have caused another person.
What is done a month before Rosh Hashanah?
A ran’s horn (Shofar) is blown daily in the Synagogue except on Shabbat.
What happens at the end of the Synagogue service the day before Rosh Hashanah?
The Kiddush blessing is said and prayers are focused on asking God to continue to be the king of the world.
What is eaten?
apples dipped in honey - a symbol of hope for a sweet new year. A fish head - to show desire for good deeds to grow in number like fish.

Why is Yom Kippur the holiest day in all of Judaism?
It is the day of Atonement.
What is the day of atonement?
When God seals the book of Judgement. the last chance to repent for any sins. when a Jew can fix his relationship with God.
How is Yom Kippur observed?
no work is done
jews fast for 25 hours
bathing, wearing leather shoes, and sexual intercourse are forbidden
jews wear white as a symbol of purity
