What is the tallit?
A prayer shawl made of wool or silk, with long tassels called tzitzit attached to each corner. It is usually white with black or blue stripes.
The tallit reminds Jews what when they are wearing it?
It reminds them they are obeying God’s word when they are wearing it.
What are the tefillin?
The tefillin are a pair of black leather boxes (phylacteries) containing passages of scripture, including some of the words of the Shema. One is fastened with leather straps to the center of the forehead. One is wound around the upper arm in line with the heart.
What are the tefillin for?
They remind Jews that during prayers, their total concentration should be on God and their prayer should be straight from the heart.
Why is prayer extremely important to Jews?
it strengthens their relationship with God.
How many times a day do Jews pray?
Three times a day
The Shema is… Which begins with….
The Shema is the Jewish statement of belief in God and Him only. It begins with ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.’
What is the Amidah?
it is the standing prayer. It is also sometimes called ‘the 18 prayers’. (There are 19 now though). It is prayed in silence whilst facing Jerusalem.
