Judaism 2.10 Flashcards
How many steps does a Jewish marriage have and what are they?
There are 2 steps. They are Betrothal (when the couple are engaged) and the wedding itself.
What was the tradition for a Jew find a good spouse?
Their parents usually choose one for them with the help of a matchmaker.
Why do some Orthodox Jews carry on the tradition for finding their son or daughter a spouse?
Because they believe that the matchmaker is working on God’s behalf to find a soulmate for each person.
What does the word Betrothal mean?
Not ‘what is it’, what its translation?
The Hebrew word for Betrothal is ‘Kiddushin’. It comes from a word meaning ‘set aside’ or ‘made holy’.
How can betrothal be broken?
By death or divorce.
What will a betrothed couple not do in the 12 months before their wedding?
They will not live together. But they will prepare for their lives together.
During the betrothal part of the wedding ceremony, the Ketubah is drawn up.
What is the Ketubah?
What does it cover for Orthodox Jews?
Its the wedding contract. For Orthodox Jews, it covers aspects such a as a husbands duties to his wife, the conditions of inheritance, how the children will be supported, and how the man will provide for the woman if they get divorced.
For Reform Jews, what does the Ketubah cover?
It covers spiritual aspirations rather than legal rights. It often covers things like hopes for the marriage and mutual agreements in case of divorce.
What does the groom do at the last Shabbat service before the wedding?
He takes part in a Torah blessing and announces his intention to marry.
Where and when do Wedding services take place?
Weddings most often take place in the synagogue but can in theory be anywhere. They can be on a any day except for Shabbat or another festival.
Where does the groom stand during the betrothal part of the wedding?
Under the Chuppah. He faces Jerusalem.
What does the bride then do? (Think about sharks behaviour)
She circles him 7 times. This shows they will make personal space for each other 7 times a week. (as in every day. Whenever necessary)
After the circling happens, what would happen in an Orthodox wedding?
How would it be different from a reform Wedding?
The groom would bless some wine, before putting a plain wedding ring on his brides finger and saying some form of Jewish wedding vowels.
This is similar to reform Judaism. However, in Reform, usually both the bride and the groom, just like in Christianity, exchange rings.
What happens after the ring(s) are given?
The wedding contract is signed in front of a witness. The Rabbi recites 7 wedding blessings, makes a short speech and blesses the couple.
What does the groom do after the Rabbi has blessed them? Why?
He breaks a glass (wrapped in paper or cloth for safety) under his heel to show regret for the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem.
